The Queen’s Cup
The Queen’s Cup is a quality Group 3 thoroughbred’s race conducted at Victoria’s famous Flemington Racecourse on Emirates Stakes Day, which is the final meeting of the annual Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Held on the first Saturday in November each year, the Saturday after the iconic Melbourne Cup runs on the Tuesday, Emirates Stakes Day features five Group status races including the Group 3 Queen’s Cup.

A handicap race run over 2600m the Queen’s Cup is worth $250,000 in prize money, which is considered high stakes for a Group 3 event, and was previously known as the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Other highlight races at the meeting include the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) and the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m).
Queen’s Cup History
The race now known as the Queen’s Cup was first run in 1854 making it one of the Victorian Racing Club’s oldest classic races.
Originally run over a much longer distance of 4800m, the race length of the Queen’s Cup has gradually decreased to its current distance of 2600m.
Starting as a Principal Race, the Queen’s Cup was elevated to a Group 2 event from 1979 – 2004 before being downgraded to its current Group 3 stats in 2005.
Over the year’s this race has been registered under a number of different names.
First called the Queen’s Plate, it has also been known as the Flemington Plate, C.B. Fisher Plate and Queen Elizabeth Stakes before renamed as the Queen’s Cup for 2010 edition.
